Determine Your Visa Type
Choose the right visa category for your trip
Not Started
L Visa — Tourism / Family Visit
For sightseeing, visiting friends or relatives. Most common visa type. Single, double, or multiple entry available.
M Visa — Business / Commercial
For business meetings, trade fairs, and commercial activities. Requires an invitation letter from a Chinese business.
X1/X2 Visa — Student
X1 for study over 180 days, X2 for 180 days or less. Requires admission notice and JW201/JW202 form.
Z Visa — Work / Employment
For taking up employment in China. Requires a work permit notification letter. Must apply for a residence permit after arrival.
Q1/Q2 Visa — Family Reunion
For visiting Chinese family members. Q1 for long-term stays (over 180 days), Q2 for short-term (up to 180 days).
K Visa — Talent / Youth Exchange
For foreign youth or scientific talent exchange programs. Can be issued for up to 10 years with multiple entry.

Prepare Required Documents
Gather everything before starting your application

Valid passport (6+ months remaining)
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your planned departure date from China, with at least one blank visa page.
Passport photo (48×33mm, white background)
Recent photo taken within 6 months. Must be exactly 48×33mm with white background. No hats, no sunglasses. Both digital and printed copies needed.
Completed visa application form
Filled out online via COVA. Must print the confirmation page with barcode and sign it.
Invitation letter (if applicable)
Required for M (business), Q (family), and some L (tourist) visas. Must be an original or certified copy from your inviter in China.
Flight itinerary / round-trip bookings
Confirmed round-trip or onward flight booking. Tip: book refundable tickets until your visa is approved.
Hotel bookings or host accommodation proof
Confirmed hotel reservations for your entire stay. If staying with friends/family, a letter from your host with a copy of their ID.
Bank statement / proof of funds
Some embassies require 3–6 months of bank statements showing sufficient funds. Not always required, but good to have ready.
⚠️ Photo requirements are strict. Chinese visa photos differ from US/EU passport photos. Use the COVA photo validator tool to verify your photo before submitting.

Fill Out Online Application (COVA)
Complete the form at cova.mfa.gov.cn

Create account on COVA website
Go to cova.mfa.gov.cn and create an account. Save your login details — you'll need them later.
Fill out all required fields
Complete every section: personal info, travel details, education, work history. The form is long — allow 30–45 minutes.
Upload digital passport photo
Upload your 48×33mm photo. The system will auto-validate. If it fails, retake and re-upload.
Review all information carefully
Double-check names, dates, passport number, and visa type. Errors can cause delays or rejection.
Submit and print confirmation page
After submitting, print the confirmation page with the barcode. You must bring this to your appointment. Save the application number.
💡 Save often. The COVA form can time out. Click "Save" frequently to avoid losing your work. You can return to complete it later using your application number.

Upload your flight itinerary, hotel bookings, invitation letter, and any other required documents based on your visa type.
Find your nearest CVASC center
Locate your China Visa Application Service Center. Check our embassy directory for addresses and service areas.
Book an appointment online
Appointments can fill up during peak seasons (summer, holidays). Book as early as possible — ideally 2–3 weeks before your planned submission date.
Confirm appointment details
Check the date, time, and location. Note what documents to bring. Some centers require printed copies; others accept digital.

Submit Passport & Biometrics at CVASC

Bring your appointment confirmation, passport, printed COVA form, and all supporting documents. Late arrivals may need to rebook.
Submit application form and documents
Staff will verify your documents and collect your application. Make sure all photocopies are clear and complete.
Provide fingerprints (biometrics)
Most applicants aged 14–70 must have fingerprints taken. Keep your fingers clean and dry. Some visa types may be exempt.
Pay the visa fee
Fees vary by nationality and processing speed. Credit/debit cards usually accepted. Check the fee calculator for estimates.
Keep the collection receipt safe
You'll receive a pickup receipt with a tracking number. You need this to collect your passport — don't lose it!

Use the tracking number on your receipt to check your application status on the CVASC website.
Wait for standard processing (4 business days)
Standard processing takes 4 working days. Express (2–3 days) and rush (1 day) options were available at the time of application if you paid extra.
Watch for email/SMS notification
Most centers send a notification when your passport is ready for pickup. Check spam folders just in case.
⚠️ Don't book non-refundable flights until your visa is approved. Processing can be delayed during holidays (Chinese New Year, National Day) or if additional documents are needed.

Collect Passport with Visa
Pick up your passport and verify the visa

Collect passport in person or via mail
Bring your collection receipt and ID. Some centers offer postal delivery for an additional fee — arrange this at your appointment.
Verify visa details immediately
Check: your name, passport number, visa type, validity dates, number of entries, and duration of stay. Report any errors immediately.
Make a photocopy / photo of your visa
Keep a copy separately from your passport. Useful if your passport is lost or stolen while traveling.

Register with your embassy in China
Register with your country's embassy or consulate so they can contact you in an emergency. US citizens: STEP program. UK citizens: FCDO travel advice.
Download WeChat (essential app)
WeChat is used for everything in China: payments, messaging, mini-programs, train tickets, and more. Set it up and link a payment method before you go.
Download Alipay (for payments)
Alipay allows foreigners to link international credit cards. Together with WeChat Pay, you'll be able to pay at almost any shop or restaurant.
Set up a VPN (for internet access)
Many western websites and apps are blocked in China (Google, WhatsApp, Instagram, etc.). Install a VPN before departure — it's harder to do from within China.
Download offline translation app
Google Translate or Baidu Translate with offline Chinese language pack. Essential for menus, signs, and conversations.
Download offline maps (Amap / Baidu Maps)
Google Maps works poorly in China. Amap (高德地图) or Baidu Maps are far more accurate and work offline.
💡 Pro tip: Download all apps and set up payment methods before arriving in China. Many services require phone verification and stable internet — both easier to manage from home.
